Legal aid & advocacy · Ethan-Mercy Foundation

Break the chain. Open the way to justice.

Across Nigeria’s correctional facilities, an estimated 70% of inmates are awaiting trial, often detained for years beyond the statutory period without legal counsel. Ethan-Mercy Foundation’s legal aid campaign focuses directly on prison decongestion and securing fair hearings for marginalized detainees.

Piloted in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, our legal advocacy teams work hand-in-hand with volunteer barristers, civil society organizations, and the NYSC Rivers State legal aid community to review case files, file bail applications, and facilitate pro-bono defense.

Our Three Core Legal Interventions

Awaiting Trial Case Reviews

Identifying eligible inmates detained on minor infractions or lack of bail sureties, working through formal court processes to secure lawful discharges.

Volunteer Advocate Network

Mobilizing dedicated legal practitioners across Rivers State who donate billable hours to defend inmates who cannot afford legal representation.

Systemic Identification Reform

Authoring policy proposals on reinforcing digital mugshot and criminal records systems in Nigeria to prevent mistaken arrests and lost case documentation.
